Positioning Statement

For art institutions and media companies that are looking for more audience engagement through the creation of art and visuals, Angela Xu is an artist that creates work and experiences people can resonate and engage with through surrealism because, in a world that is oftentimes so disconnected from reality, a little connection is what we need.

My work examines social phenomena through a psychoanalytical lens, presented in predominantly paintings and 2D media but more increasingly sculpture and digital modeling. Materializing surreal forms and juxtapositions in imagery and texture, my work attempts to visually and cognitively provoke. I find inspiration in niche facets of social matters that have evolved into such ubiquity that they go unnoticed. I attempt to challenge societal “facts” or notions that have become so established and ingrained that they seem to be irreversible and unchangeable, so much so that their omnipresence creates an illusion that they are simply a part of existence. Intertwining familiar imagery with uncanny and dreamlike landscapes, my paintings experiment with reinterpreting notional social concepts as well as exploring seemingly mundane observations or just fulfilling a fantasy. Using my work as a channel to fictionalize yet literalize said societal “facts” and phenomena, there is a sense of escapism involved, specifically in stripping the reality of the subject and creating a new context within a fictional landscape. By stripping away this unchallenged facticity within a recognizable environment, I seek to expose and introduce the possibility of the idea that anything and everything can be reimagined or altered. I often take images and symbols from my own dreams to incorporate into my work. As a result, much of it is inherently personal but also eerily nostalgic, borderline disturbing, for viewers. While painting is the medium I gravitate towards simply because of its comprehensiveness, I use a variety of materials and processes; thus, the subject matter remains the commonality between each piece.
